Sitting in the cave with Plato
who comes to mind as you look at the flames?
Is it Nietzsche’s Superman, staring at the abyss?
Or is Descartes recalled
as he thinks therefore he is?
Do you live by philosophy and
die by the thought?
Who knows how many battles
Sun Tzu actually fought?
And when the argument is over will you ex-Hume
the dialogues and Burkian rants
or merely contemplate, like Buddha,
and dismiss the rhetorical Kant.

haha nice step through some very deep thinkers there…much to comtemplate in their words…and yours…think i will just sit by the flames for a bit in silence….
Thanks Brian, stay by the fire as long as you like – there should be some beer somewhere…
One’s gotta think these guys had a sense of humor. I liked the pun on Hume’s name, that’s precious! Not sure that Kant would appreciate being labeled as rhetorical. In fact, he’s probably the least rhetorical philosopher, except maybe Spinoza or Hobbes. An interesting historical note: Hobbes was so incensed by the rhetoricians, as he calked them, he set out to formulate a philosophy syllogistic and deductive only. Strangely, not only did the term have philosophical import for him, it also had political meaning. The rhetoricians wete the ones opposing Autocracy and Kingly power, doncha know?
Hi Charles, I bow to your superior philosophical knowledge, especially on Hobbes! I like Kant, particularly his call to arms – sapere aude…
I like the weaving of the famous names and their quotes (my hubby is into philosophy) into this wonderful prose ~
Nice thoughts ~
Hi Heaven, thanks for that, I enjoyed writing this piece…
Loved it!
Me too.
Good work!
Thanks guys!
A clever, fun piece … not many philosophical poems you can say that about, I bet! J.P.Sartre, can I get a witness – no? I thought not …
smiles…made me think of immanuel kant’s sapere aude again…being brave enough to use one’s brain and think independent…i don’t envy the philosophers..think they had a hard time sometimes with their digging deeper and deeper into what you can’t really grab with your hands…enjoyed your poem kick out the jams
Thanks Claudia, the thing about philosophy is that it is endless and timeless…
Well done!
Thanks Mama Zen!
